Fishermen enjoying the new water, lower Tongariro

Brian Willson NZPFGA member, professional guide and I Love Fly Fishing shop partner, brings us his weekly fly fishing report from Turangi for the Central North Island lakes and rivers.  For up to date info, for what flies are working and if you want to call to the shop – 8 Wiremu Street – call Brian on 021667867.  Brian fishes Euro/Czech, Dry Fly, Trout Spey, Nymph and Wet Fly.

Hello fellow fly fishers,

Another week has come and gone and throughout this period all rivers have been at fishable levels and indeed have fished well.  The last few days have been quite cool, and this is typical for this time of year. It seems every September a southerly arrives which indicates the end of Winter and the beginning of Spring. The next few months will see all sorts of weather, sometimes experiencing 4 seasons in the one day.  This is also the time of year when you will experience a mixed bag of fish but generally plenty of them.  The recovering fish will increase but a lot of them will be hungry and eager to put on the condition that they have lost while spawning.  There will also still be a number of fish that haven’t spawned yet so be ready for them.

Fishing the Braids.
Upstream from the Braids. The bank has gone.

It was a pleasure last Friday to take a regular client to the lower Tongariro. Certainly, a lot of the river has changed. One section in “The Braids” area where there used to be a 6 metre high bank on the true right bank has changed forever. That is to say, the bank has been wiped out completely and is now a wide area of river flats. This has made for interesting fishing and there are new glides and runs that hold good numbers of fish as we found out.

Nice Jack euro nymphing.
Stumps in the Tauranga Taupo. A good place to target.

Further down the track much of the river looks the same although some previous shallow pools are now deep and some that were deep are now shallow.  This makes for interesting fishing and it is always exciting to fish new areas after a good fresh.  As mentioned, good reports have come in from the “TT” and Hinemaiaia and after the mini fresh a few days ago, I would expect the coming days and weekend to fish well.

As always if you are in Turangi and need any fishing gear, come and see me or ring me on 021667867 anytime and I will be able to sort you out at the I Love Fly Fishing Shop in Turangi.

Until next time, tight lines.
