Greetings fellow fly fishers,

Well, we are now into our final month of winter and man has it felt like it this week. Some of the days have been quite bitter with cold temperatures and high winds. The desert road has been closed a few times and today (Thursday), the mountain was closed to skiers due to blizzard conditions. Still, cold weather means more fish are entering the rivers and the weekend is shaping up pretty good with fine weather forecast and we have just had a couple of days of rough weather that should get the fish moving nicely.

Fat spawning rainboiw.
Plenty of snow at the moment.

The Hinemaiaia River has been fishing quite well but has had an influx of anglers trying to get out of the strong winds that has made fly fishing a bit unpleasant at times on the Tongariro and Tauranga Taupo. There are some nice fresh fish turning up now, but you still have to move around a bit to find them.

Fresh mint hen.
Regular client Stan, with nice Tongariro rainbow.

I would like to see even more rain next week to really heat the fishing up on all rivers.  August last year was probably the best month on the Tongariro for me and I have a bit of guiding this month especially in the second half, so hopefully I get my wish. Guiding bookings are really accelerating at present especially for the upcoming summer months. This is a sign that the rest of the world are really moving on from covid times and just getting on with enjoying the outdoors.

I suggest all fishing methods are worth a shot at the moment with woolly buggers and egg patterns doing the business. If this is not working for you, standard hare and coppers and/or pheasant tails are always worth a crack. If the fishing is hard, try a smaller size of whatever you are using. Fish areas slowly and quietly. Success will come but patience may be needed.

The I Love Fly Fishing shop continues to be busy with many repeat customers returning so thank you for that.

As always, all your fly fishing and fly tying needs call and see me at the I Love Fly Fishing Shop in Turangi, 8 Wiremu St, phone 021667867. If there is anything you need, give me a ring and I will open up anytime (within reason of course 😀), just call me and I’ll sort you out. 021667867.

Painting the Great Lake is a good change when the weather is a bit rough to go fishing.
