Grasshoppers are an annual event. Depending on the prior summer’s egg laying and this spring’s moisture and temperatures, some years can see a boom in numbers of grasshoppers and other years a bust. One thing is for certain, fly fishing with big grasshopper patterns can bring some of the largest trout in a trout river to the surface, hunting a big, easy meal. In this video we encounter a season in which a small tailwater river chugs out gin-clear water that enables us to spot the huge trout, while a boom in grasshopper numbers has these giants hunting grasshoppers. This is the once in a generation grasshopper event that we stumbled upon.
