Well, for most of the week it has been very wet, with the weather just starting to come right in the last couple of days. At the end of last week, the rivers were pretty much unfishable except for Friday afternoon. I had a few clients for whom I had to think outside the square a bit, and I decided to target the stream mouths. Even though the water was very dirty, this is how I like it at small stream mouths, as there will always be trout hanging around the edges of the dirty rip and the clear water of the lake. There are a number of trout hanging around the stream mouths at the moment and indeed entering the streams. Browns in particular are gathering, and the next few months should see some great action, especially at night.
I always look forward to this time of year, and I especially target the browns in the evening. Big dark flies (no lumo) are the way to go if you are after browns, and the wetter, most miserable the night, the better—and above all, fish until late. The darker the night the better, and flies such as a Marabou or Woolly Bugger will do the trick. Don’t be scared to go to a size 2. These flies will catch rainbows too, but if you are after rainbows, try a few lumos as well.
I had a remarkable experience last Friday when I guided a Texan on one of the river mouths. He had caught a few fish, then he had a dead weight. I could see by the shape that he had a fish, only it was dead and looked as though it had been dead for about a year. I told my client that whether a fish is alive or dead, as a fishing guide, I’m coming for them. We both had a good laugh. Believe it or not, the dead fish was hooked in the jaw.
The cicadas are in full voice at the moment and the trout are rising more frequently every day. Well, that’s it from me this week, so until next time, tight lines.
