Turangi Fishing Report 21 January 2026

Beautiful North Island Rainbow trout caught on fly in the Tongariro River

There’s no such thing as ‘too cold’ or ‘too wet’—there is only ‘under-prepared’ and ‘trout-less’.” — Tom Rosenbauer

Greetings, fellow fly fishers,

Well, it has certainly been a wet old week this week and at the time of writing (Wednesday evening), it is hosing down as it has been for most of the day. All rivers are on the rise and I’m picking they may be unfishable in the morning, but clearing weather is forecast, although a cold southerly change is forecast which may make for significantly cooler temperatures by the weekend.

It is times like these that if you want to fish and the rivers are swollen, there are always the stream mouths and lake shore to consider. The trout are hungry at the moment, eager to put condition on quickly after their spawning duties. I took a couple of Australians out today in very uncomfortable conditions where the rain didn’t let up, but a good number of fish were caught around the stream mouths.

They were actively smelting and the action was steady throughout the day. A number of the fish were spent but a good number were in pretty good nick. Smelt flies were doing the damage, particularly the Silicon Smelt. These smelt imitations are so realistic, I swear if I dropped some in the water, they would swim away.

The cicadas are in full voice now and so I suspect the trout will acquire a taste for these tasty, protein-rich insects very shortly. Well, that’s it from me this week, so until next time, tight lines.
