Well this week has almost been a carbon copy of last week. Once again last weekend saw all the rivers rise and the Tongariro getting to about 500 cumecs but after the rivers started coming down again some great fishing was to be had. There have been a lot of anglers around with the arrival of the school holidays and for those that are not too familiar with the rivers it may have been a bit of a problem finding a spot to fish. I went to the “TT” on Tuesday and there were 17 cars in the carpark.
The river was at a height of about 0.6 after being around 1.5 when the river was at its highest in the weekend. As for last week it had that nice green tinge about it and had some beautiful fresh fish coming through. I found they were coming through in groups and they were a bit spooky with the thrashing that they were receiving from all the anglers present. I did catch some nice fish however with a splendid hen weighing 7 lbs being the best of them.
My elected method of fishing was Eurostyle this day as there was no wind therefore perfect conditions for this method. Cleardrift egg varieties were doing the trick and the fish all succumbed to a V Nymph 10’ 4wt rod. The track in the “TT” has been eroded in a few places but DOC has already cut a new track where necessary.

The Tongariro continues to fish well when the river level is falling and the Hinemaiaia has had a hammering this week, but more fish are entering the system all the time. I am picking this weekend is going to be very similar to last with a fair bit of rain forecast for tomorrow (Friday). Well, that’s it from me again this week and as usual, tight lines.
