Well, it has been another interesting week on the Taupo rivers. Last weekend saw all the rivers in flood but earlier in the week they settled down to fishable levels and some superb fishing was to be had. On Tuesday I elected to try out the Tauranga Taupo River. There were a lot of cars in the carpark but then there are plenty of anglers everywhere at the moment because of the school holidays. Nevertheless, I was going to find a stretch to fish as is always possible on this river. The day was gloriously fine and surprisingly I found a beat that was absent of anglers where I have always regarded it as one of the best spots on the river.
I wasn’t wrong and within 10 minutes I was into a fish and an hour later I had landed 6. The trout were all beautiful fresh run fish obviously having entered the river earlier in the week when the heavy rains were occurring. Remarkably I ran into a number of anglers that were having a hard day and often this is because they haven’t changed their methodology. Generally, if logic tells you that there should be an abundance of fish in the water because of timing, level, colour etc then there probably is. Instead of persisting with the tried and proven, sometimes it pays to think about why you are not hooking up. It could be that you are not fishing the right depth, are in the wrong place or not using the right fly.
I left after my 6th fish of the day having adequately doing my homework as I was to be guiding later in the week which was to be today, Thursday, but I had to cancel as it is absolutely bucketing down and I fear the same scenario is going to happen as last week when this weekend is going to see all the rivers in flood again. On the plus side when the rivers fall again there will be even more fish in the river and therefore more action. The Tongariro River continues to fish well but is also becoming quite crowded. It pays to be a bit patient at this time of year because the whole idea of fishing is to enjoy the day and arguments on the river isn’t what you are after. There are always places to fish and if unsure, ask.

Had a look at the “Hine” yesterday and it too was pretty crowded. A little bit more water in it than last week and it was good to see more fish in the river. This will keep improving and in a months’ time you will just about be able to walk on their backs to get to the other side. Just remember, new licences are required for Taupo waters now and the Whakapapa River is closed. That’s it from me next week so until next time, tight lines.
