Well, this week is almost a mirror image of the last 3. The early weekdays like Monday and Tuesday have been fine then on Wednesday the weather turns and the last two days are miserable. As I am writing this (Thursday), there is quite a bit of snow around the foothills and tomorrow the expected low is -3 degrees and Southerlies so you can expect it to be very cold. I have had one client that I have had to cancel for a third time in a row because his preferred day is a Friday and for 3 weeks it hasn’t been ideal.
I did take a trio out earlier in the week. They were very much novices and not the most stable on their feet but good sorts and willing to learn. The Tongariro River was running reasonably high at about 60 cumecs but fishable. I took them to the Island Pool behind the children’s playground.
Here you don’t have to get out in the water too far so casting for my clients was safe. They didn’t take too long to pick up the casting but the fish were not responding however one of them, Mike, got hooked up and unfortunately didn’t see the strike and even though the fish was on for a while, it spat the hook before he could get it close to the net.
The Major Jones Pool, Tongariro River.
There were a number of fishermen fishing The Major Jones Pool but not much action although at different times they were having reasonable success there as well as further up in the Breakfast Pool. The other town pools have all had success at various times, patience is the key. The Hinemaiaia River is getting better every week and a Cleardrift Egg is working pretty well here.
