Well once again it has been a fairly scrappy week weather wise typical of early spring weather when 4 seasons in one day is becoming the norm. The persistent winds have been a bit of a nuisance and I guess we are going to have to put up with these for the next few months although as I am writing (Friday) it is calm and the Great Lake is dead flat.
All rivers are in great nick and if I wasn’t going down to the South Island tomorrow in search of a trophy trout ( Rainbow or Brown, I’m not fussy), then I would be probably hitting the Tauranga Taupo River which is flowing at a level of 0.5 ( my favourite level) and I’m picking will be full of receptive trout. I always find that this river fishes pretty well later in the season and indeed can be hot right up to Christmas. I am still finding that the Cleardrift Egg (available from I Love Fly Fishing) is working the best at the moment. A variety of colours is the key. A size of 6mm is standard but if the water has a bit of colour, then 8mm eggs can be deadly.
I tried out a new fly line carrier available from I Love Fly Fishing the other day (see photo), and it works very well indeed. It basically is an alternative to a stripping basket and is clipped onto the wading belt and every second loop of casting line is slotted into the groove. When casting the line comes out of the groove cleanly with no tangles and after a bit of practice positioning every second loop into the groove can be done without the need to look where you are placing the line , i.e. your eyes can be immediately focused on the indicator in front of you. Excellent. The Tongariro has fished steady this week with some days better than others with the slow days quite hard at times. So, it is a matter of timing and if you are prepared to put in the hours then you will strike a golden patch sooner or later.

There is more angler space on all the rivers now as many fishers believe the winter runs are pretty much over, but this is a great time to be fishing and the next couple of months can be the best in a calendar year.
Remember October 1 opens up a lot of new water in many areas like the Whakapapa River etc so remember to purchase a fish and game licence which are available now.
