Greetings fellow fly fishers,
Firstly, I must apologise for not providing a report for a month or so. I have had a bereavement in the family and have been fairly busy with sorting out a multitude of things but now I am back on deck and look forward to telling you all what is going on in the Turangi region.
Finally in the last week or so the Tongariro River is rising and falling naturally and not being kept at around 55 cumecs minimum.
Even with the rain these last few days with the river peaking around 300 cumecs, the river has dropped below 50 cumecs for the first time in a couple of months.
Genesis have obviously finished the water diversion up by the Poutu intake and consequently some very good fish are now starting to turn up. The fishing has been quite tough in recent months but there are signs that we are going to experience some supreme fishing in the coming weeks.
I went down to the Tongariro yesterday and had some good action swinging a black woolly bugger on a quick sinking line.
The fish I caught were all fresh fat rainbows and I dropped a few as well. The day was dismal although pleasant enough (especially when the fish are biting). Unfortunately, the forecast for the next few days is pretty rough so I hope we can get some settled weather soon so we can capitalise on the excellent fishing at hand.
The Tauranga Taupo River has been fishing quite well for the last couple of months and is running high (but fishable) as I write but I’m picking it is going to rise too high from this afternoon and indeed in the next few days so it will take some time to settle down after that. I like this river to be at a height around 500 mls or thereabouts.
With all this wet weather around it is an ideal time to tie some flies and you can’t go too wrong by tying a heap of Clearview egg patterns because in the oncoming weeks and months ahead, the trout will be smashing them.
