Tonga Bomb – Double Tungsten Bead Heavy Nymph
The Tonga Bomb is a purpose-built heavy nymph designed for the deep pools and fast-flowing waters of the Taupo region, New Zealand. Named after the legendary Tongariro River — renowned for its exceptional winter trout runs — and "bomb" for its ability to get down fast, this fly is engineered for one job: reaching the depth where winter-run trout hold.
Unlike summer fish, these migratory trout moving up from Lake Taupo won't rise in the water column to intercept flies. The double tungsten bead construction provides the weight needed to cut through fast currents and sink quickly to the fish's level — no messing around.
Tonga Bombs are most effective when fished in tandem with an unweighted pattern such as a Glo Bug, Cleardrift Soft Egg, or Slushie fly, allowing the Tonga Bomb to anchor the rig while the trailing fly drifts naturally at depth.
Available in a range of sizes to suit different water types and flows, and in multiple bead colour combinations to match conditions and fish preference.
