Greetings fellow fly fishers,
Well, we are now into July and well into winter. This week has seen some good old-fashioned frosts with beautiful, calm, fine days following. It is simply a fantastic time to be out there doing it. I was out on the Tongariro yesterday afternoon and in many places along the track in the shade, the ice is still very thick on the ground. There are a number of good fish in the river, however, and the numbers are improving all the time.
At the time of writing (Friday morning), the Tongariro is running at 23 cumecs, the Whanganui at 17, and the “TT” at a height of 0.2. This makes all the rivers clear and very fishable. A change of weather is on the way, and it appears we are going to get a bit of rough stuff for the weekend. I am finding that with the clear water, very small nymphs are working well, and wee wets are also worth a shot on the swing.
The Hinemaiaia River is fishing exceptionally well, as is the norm for this time of year, but what is also normal is that it is heavily fished. You will receive less pressure on this river later in the afternoon and still have good success. The “TT” is starting to fish really well if you want some less pressured water. Euro-style, especially, is working well.
Just a reminder to everybody to make sure you all have new fishing licences. This is easily overlooked every year (I’ve done it myself). Well, that will be it for this week, so until next time,
