Well, we are only a couple of days away from officially being in winter and therefore the big winter runs are soon to be upon us. Yesterday I decided to investigate the Hinemaiaia River. Upon arrival I noted the river was at an ideal level for fishing with a good flow present but not discoloured by recent rain. I also noted a lack of anglers. I came across 1 solitary vehicle and by the looks of things the 2 fishermen that were occupants of it, were fishless.
I walked along the banks and looked into the usual pools that hold fish and could see immediately that the early runs up this river have not started yet. I did spy the odd fish here and there, but they were few and far between. Doc have done a good job and recently done some track clearing in anticipation for the numbers of anglers that will soon arrive. I figure it is at least a month away yet. I never find it’s a waste of time coming here as it’s such a beautiful river.
There is still action at the stream mouths and as the new moon has just gone one can expect a few more dark nights this week. At time of writing, it is raining, and this is making for some excellent fishing in the Tongariro River with more fish also entering the “TT”. I am still finding small nymph patterns doing the trick, but wet liners are also having some excellent sport with the good old woolly bugger being the fly of choice. The track down the lower river of the Tongariro has not been fixed up at time of writing and it is a bit dangerous, so I hope Doc rectify it soon.

More rain forecast in the next week, and this will only be good for fishers, and it won’t be long before egg pattern flies such as the Cleardrift Egg (available from I Love Fly Fishing), will be a dominant pattern in the fly box. I like to have a few different colours in the Cleardrift Egg and a couple of sizes too, i.e. 6mm and 8mm.
