Greetings Fellow Fly Fishers.
Well, it is Friday 22/8 and a mighty fine day at that, and it is pleasing to see the nasty southerlies that we have been having all week have weakened somewhat and it has been quite pleasant out on the river. It is amazing how the carparks fill up when a nice winter’s day comes about. Today The Hinemaiaia was packed with fishers as was the Tongariro. The “TT” wasn’t as busy so if you are looking for quieter water you may consider targeting there although it is running low and clear as are all the surrounding rivers and fishing today was a bit hard, but the fish are certainly there, so it is just a matter of timing really.
With so much angler activity on the rivers it pays to remember angler’s etiquette. I had a case today where an older angler went straight in front of me and not only that, stood almost out in the middle of the river where most of the available trout would have been swimming between his legs. I was not far off leaving anyway but sometimes these senior fishers don’t seem to know correct fisher etiquette, or do they?
I had another guide with 2 clients come in below me, so I removed myself from the pool to give them a bit more space as the old timer in front of me wasn’t moving. Now I wasn’t too concerned as I will always allow another fisherman a spot and indeed if I am catching fish, I will often give him/her my spot because I can catch fish anytime but I can see how arguments can start on the river and we don’t go fishing for that to happen. Cleardrift Eggs in multiple forms seem to be as good as anything at the moment.

Fairly settled weather is forecast for the weekend then I think the weather may pack up again so best to get out there and do it.
