Hinemaiaia River success.
Greetings fellow fly fishers,
Well, we have had another topsy turvy week as far as weather goes but with plenty of fine periods amongst the wind and the rain. The rivers are fishing pretty well with a number of recovering fish turning up now. These recovering fish put up a pretty good scrap as a rule as they are hungry and eager to put on condition again as quickly as possible after the spawning runs.
I had the pleasure yesterday (Wednesday) of guiding 2 retired dairy farmers, Brian and John. They were both beginners but picked up the basics pretty quickly and I felt confident that success would be not too far away. I chose the Tongariro River and after a slow start the fish decided to do the decent thing and come on to the bite. Both Brian and John experienced some good action with some feisty rainbows, some landed and some lost. The day looked like the heavens were going to open up at any time but fortunately the weather Gods were kind and the rain stayed away just long enough to get a very enjoyable days fishing in.
Brian and John were good company, and we had our share of laughs throughout the day. We had quite a bit of overnight rain last night and The Tongariro rose to about 80 cumecs but at time of writing (Thursday night) the river has dropped back to about 35 cumecs and the forecast would suggest nothing too drastic is going to change making the upcoming weekend looking pretty good for fishing.

The “TT” also rose to about .7 but now is sitting at a very fishy .5. The weather outlook for the weekend is fair with Sunday probably the pick of the days. The good old Hare and Copper nymph seemed to be as good as anything this week so if you haven’t used one for a while, I suggest you give it a try.
