Greetings fellow fly fishers,
We are now headed into the middle of October and this week have experienced typical Spring weather. Last weekend the rivers were up a bit but all very fishable. We had some heavy rain at the beginning of the week which put the “TT” out for a while but at the time of writing it is settling down nicely and my guess is that it will be spot on for the weekend given that the forecast in the next few days is favourable. Last weekend I had the pleasure of taking a teacher from Sydney for 2 days.
On Saturday I decided to try out the “TT” because at a level of about 0.5, I thought it would be ideal. We tried nymph and swinging streamers and found that the streamers were working the best today. Richard landed some nice fish and unfortunately lost an absolute horse which broke the line at short range. The fish was clearly visible as he had it in the shallows however, to Richard’s dismay, the trout was far from finished and took off like a thunder bolt when it came close to the shore. The weight was too much to counter the unexpected slingshot effect and the 4kg leader broke like dental floss. 😩. However, the drug is the tug as they say but I wanted a photo of that one, it was up there.
Sunday was a different day and while it looked quite fishy, the action was not as good as Saturday. The sky was pretty grey all day with frequent showers. The barometer was dropping and as so often happens when this occurs, the fish can go off the bite. The Hinemaiaia continues to fish pretty well with plenty of fish (though spooky) still in the system. Not many anglers in this river now and in a few weeks as it does every year, there will be few if any anglers fishing it. I find this river, in the summer, can be a little gem for light gear and dry flies at times which can continue right up to the first Winter runs.

The Tongariro River fishing remains very good and at times can be really hot if you happen to be in the right spot at the right time. The Cleardrift Egg flies are still working well as are the usual Hare and Coppers, Pheasant Tails etc. (Not too big) I have a few things on in the next week or so with a 70th birthday to go to in Christchurch amongst other things but I will shortly have a look at the Whanganui and Whakapapa Rivers so I can relay back some info on that in the coming weeks. So, all rivers and weather are looking pretty good for the weekend so the idea would be to throw the rod in the car and come on down, up or over, whatever the case may be.
