Greetings fellow fly fishers,
Well, the silly season is almost behind us although with all the stats still to come I suspect the Central Plateau is going to remain pretty populated until after NZ day. I have been pretty busy this last week guiding, mainly Americans, around our rivers. All rivers around Lake Taupo are low and clear and the fishing at times has been quite tough but if you are in the right place at the right time then some fish will come to your net.
I have spent a few days over in the Whanganui/ Whakapapa Rivers where it has been a bit quieter as far as holiday makers go and the fishing at times over there has been quite superb. Very good, conditioned trout that fight like Kingfish with several battles taking line well into the backing.
I have found that the fish over there seem to be fairly well spread so it doesn’t seem to matter where you go, any likely looking water is sure to hold trout, so perseverance is the key. Cicadas are just starting to be heard and it shouldn’t be too long before the trout acquire a taste for them. My most productive method this week however has been tandem flies/nymphs under an indicator although dry fly/dropper is working pretty good as well.

My main nymph pattern this week has been pheasant tail types or variants of these, and small, say 14 or 16. Fine weather is forecast for the next 5 days or so, so I expect things to stay pretty much the same in the near future. A great dollop of rain will certainly improve the fishing down here because there are reasonable numbers of trout around. They just need a bit of a kick stars to get them on the bite.
Well, that will do for this week so get out there and get them.
