Hi from Brisbane with a recovering hen from the Tongariro.

Greetings fellow fly fishers,
Another week flies by and in this neck of the woods it has been very warm, windy and dry. All the rivers are low and clear, and the fishing is getting a bit tougher. Certainly, a good day of rain would be welcomed to stir things up a bit. There are good numbers of fish still in the river but many of them are showing no interest in well-presented nymphs.
When conditions are like this, I tend to target the faster water and if there is no joy there, have a look at even faster water. The good news is that there are a few more trout rising now so the dry fly or dry fly and dropper comes into play. I had a few clients this week and while we did have some success, generally the fishing was quite hard. I found small nymphs working quite well and Caddis patterns are catching their share.
My pick of the rivers in the Taupo area is the Tongariro but outside the area, The Whanganui and Whakapapa are starting to fish well. Fishing activity on these rivers will increase as Christmas approaches so getting to the carparks early here is recommended. The wind has been a bit of a curse this week but forecast for the weekend is cooler weather but even stronger winds.
Jim throwing a good line, Whanganui River. – Back you go. – The Judge’s Pool, Tongariro.
I did a bit of experimenting this afternoon and tried out a 10wt Predator rod with a 10 wt line. The Predator Rod (available from I Love Fly Fishing and also available in lower weights), is generally looked upon as a saltwater rod but in windy conditions on the Tongariro it certainly makes casting a lot easier as it powers through the wind with ease.
Not much more to say this week so, as always, tight lines and I’ll catch you next week.
