Greetings fellow fly fishers,
Well, we are now into July and it’s getting a bit colder out there. This morning, Thursday, I woke up to minus 4 degrees. I swear some of the fish caught this morning had to come out of the water shivering. The day was fine, and all rivers are at good levels with the Tongariro running at around 31 cumecs and the Tauranga Taupo at a level of about 0.5m. I always find this time of year a delight to fish because if you are fortunate to get a fine day and as long as you are dressed up warm, winter fishing can be the most productive and to experience the freshness and beauty of the outdoors is great for body and soul.
As for last week there are good numbers of fish in the river and the patient fisherman will be rewarded if he/she is prepared to adapt to different techniques when and if necessary and generally just put the time in. Angler numbers are quite high and next week sees the start of the school holidays so one can expect an increase in angler activity. There is plenty of water to fish out there so don’t be too concerned if some of your favourite spots are taken up. At this time of year, a number of spots that were unlikely holding spots a few months ago will now hold fish. Try them out. You may be pleasantly surprised.
Timing seems to be the key at the moment with some hot action at times followed by some flat spells. Remember, a lot of district water like The Whakapapa River is now closed to fishing so if you have a fish and game licence it might pay to check where you are still permitted to fish.
The weather forecast for the coming weekend looks promising so if you are looking to come into the area you should be able to expect some good fishing. That will be it from me now so keep those lines tight and we’ll catch you next time.
While I am not selling, I Love Fly Fishing gear from the store in Turangi now, I would recommend you look at the products online, www.iloveflyfishing.kiwi and order what you need. Feel free to call Barrie, 021-925006. You will receive your goods in quick order and at a great price.
Well, that’s it for another week so get out there and do it, you won’t be disappointed. -Brian.
