A reinstated annual friendly comp between North Shore Fly Fishers and the Auckland Fly Fishing Anglers Club saw myself and some of the guys getting down to Turangi for the opening of the Winter season. It was busy at times coinciding with the start of the school holidays, but we all managed to find water to keep our lines wet. The river was low and clear but the fish were there, in great condition and number and were in the mood to smack a swung fly, so there were no complaints our way.
We had some new guys along and managed to get them all into fish with plenty of ideas to take away from the weekend. One new member, William, turning down the option to be lead into some easy pickings on the nymph, chose to be taken out for a swing and was rewarded with his first fish on a swung fly.
I was having my second play with the new OPST Oval running line and after more time on the water have found it really does get very little line twist. It also has a nice feel for stripping and pinching on the cork. Not sure if it replaces Lazar line for me yet, time will tell.

It was a great time getting down with plenty of fish, hours swinging flies with catch ups and crossed paths with quality folk. A well cooked BBQ and drinks set the aftermath of the competition that went North Shores way this time and yarns were spun into the night. Thanks to the Auckland Fly Club and adios Tongariro, can’t wait to get back down!
