Turangi Fishing Report 21 September 2023

Trout On The Swing.

Brian Willson NZPFGA member, professional guide and I Love Fly Fishing shop partner, brings us his weekly fly fishing report from Turangi for the Central North Island lakes and rivers.  For up to date info, for what flies are working and if you want to call to the shop – 8 Wiremu Street – call Brian on 021667867.  Brian fishes Euro/Czech, Dry Fly, Trout Spey, Nymph and Wet Fly.

Greetings fellow fly fishers,

Well, we have had a fine but often very windy week but that has not stopped some fantastic fishing on the rivers. I have had some fantastic reports to me from fishers that have been using a variety of styles. The lower Tongariro has seen some great swing fishing with woolly buggers and similar type flies. Nymph fishing with just about any pattern and often small sizes down to #16 in the clearer water.

Adele with a great fish.
Let me go.

Czech nymphing has been popular and productive as well and seems to be an ever-increasing popular method to catch a trout. All rivers at time of writing are low and clear and a pleasure to fish. There are still a lot of fish in all rivers and from all accounts there are a lot more to come up through the system as yet because the runs have started late this year so expect more of the same for probably the next couple of months.

Almost beaten, Tongariro River.

The rivers are still being well occupied by anglers, but they are thinning out a bit now allowing more space. I am still waiting for a decent fresh to hit the Tauranga Taupo as it has remained low pretty much throughout the whole winter. The fish are there though and as I have said before, I believe the fishing will be dynamite, perhaps the best of all the rivers in the coming months. Watch this space.

The I Love Fly Fishing shop in Turangi continues to be busy this week with keen fishers eager to take advantage of the superb fishing on offer. A reminder to purchase your F&G license for the rest of NZ before October 1 so you don’t have a bad experience with a fisheries officer. I say this because purchasing a license can be easily overlooked when you are not always conscious of what day it is. I have overlooked it myself (briefly, in the past). So that’s about it.

As always, all your fly fishing and fly tying needs call and see me at the I Love Fly Fishing Shop in Turangi, 8 Wiremu St, phone 021667867. If there is anything you need, give me a ring and I will open up anytime (within reason of course 😀), just call me and I’ll sort you out. 021667867.
