Greetings fellow fly fishers,

Well, another week has come and gone and it sure has been windy. I have had the pleasure of guiding 2 Australians for the last 5 days and have them until Sunday. They are regular clients that have been coming over to see me over the last 10 years or so. The fishing has been testing with the windy weather although the Hinemaiaia River, as usual, has been very pleasant as there is a lot of shelter here. The Hinemaiaia is still fishing very well and there are very few anglers about now on all rivers. Earlier in the week a fresh after last Saturday’s rain saw some good trout action on the “TT. I love this river at this time of year after a fresh where all methods of fishing are worth a shot. I particularly like swinging woolly buggers in the shallow, ripply runs. The Tongariro River continues to have some beautiful fish come out of it and it is a pleasure to fish at the moment.

I had my 2 Aussie clients up at the “Cattle Rustler’s pool the other day and took a vantage point up on the true left bank on the rock platform. The water below is very deep. Lo and behold I could make out a truly very large fish rising from the depths. He rose to about 2 metres from the surface, and I could make out all the spots that gave his identity away. He was a huge brown Jack maybe close to that magic double figure mark. I managed to show one of my Aussie clients the trout, but he disappeared before I could show the other.

The cleardrift egg has been doing most of the damage this week although small flashbacks etc have also done the trick. The Hinemaiaia River certainly looked the goods this week. I spotted Didymo Dave up there this week. He was doing his usual good stuff keeping the place tidy by picking up rubbish etc. We saw a couple of large plastic soft drink bottles that we were going to pick up and dispose of on our exit, but he had picked them up before we had a chance to. It must be very frustrating to him to see these litterbug’s rubbish all over the place. I would ask everyone, if they see some rubbish around the place, pick it up and dispose of it. This will give Dave a good helping hand and protect our beautiful rivers.
