Greetings fellow fly fishers,

Well, we have just fished out first week of Spring and most of it has been in stunning weather although the last couple of days has been a bit showery. All rivers are still pretty low but, as for last week, they are all full of fish. Fishers that have come into the shop have reported seeing lots of fish in the Tauranga Taupo River, but they all say that are not all that easy to catch. There is still plenty of time to experience the superb fishing this river can offer though. When the next decent fresh occurs on this river I am picking it will be the number one river to be on. At present at 0.2m it is running at less than half the flow that I like. Increased water volume is sure to get some of those stubborn fish moving.

Apprentice fisher Erica doing well at the Hinemaiaia River. She looks very comfortable in her new Traper jacket purchased from the I Love Fly Fishing store in Turangi.

The Hinemaiaia and Tongariro Rivers are both still fishing well and are experiencing heavy angler pressure. Don’t be put off by this, because there are so many fish in the river, you only have to find a likely spot such as a fishy looking ripple or a concentrated foam line and the fish will find you. Choice of nymph doesn’t seem to matter too much. The Cleardrift eggs are working very nicely but the go to natural patterns such as hare and copper and pheasant tails are catching their share as well. I had the pleasure of guiding a father / daughter duo earlier in the week. Erica had never fished before, so I decided to take them both to the Hinemaiaia River. Erica was an easy pupil and picked up the drift (excuse the pun), very quickly and it was a pleasure to go through the whole day with very few birds’ nests or lost flies!!😬.

Nice fish, Tauranga Taupo River.

Both Mike and Erica had some good action and thoroughly enjoyed their experience made even more pleasurable after fixing them up with some good tackle and clothing from the I Love Fly Fishing shop in Turangi 🙂. Lake Otamangakau opened for fishing this week so if the fish quality is anything like last year, it should be a good season. There have been some big fish go through the traps this year. The I Love Fly Fishing shop in Turangi has been really busy this week with some fishers coming all the way from the Hawkes Bay to purchase gear. I thank you for your support and trust you are all catching plenty of fish out there.

Remember, NZ fishing licenses are now available, and October 1 is just around the corner. This is when much more water is available to the angler such as the Mohaka, Waipunga and Whakapapa Rivers. Well, that’s about it from me and as always, for all your fly fishing needs, come and see me at the I Love Fly Fishing shop in Turangi, anytime and I’ll sort you out.

As always, all your fly fishing and fly tying needs call and see me at the I Love Fly Fishing Shop in Turangi, 8 Wiremu St, phone 021667867. If there is anything you need, give me a ring and I will open up anytime (within reason of course 😀), just call me and I’ll sort you out. 021667867.
