Greetings fellow fly fishers.

Another week has come and gone and I must say I am feeling a lot better this week as I get over covid. I still have a few after effects such as a bit of a cough and a tad lethargic but all in all, much better and have managed to get a bit of time on the water. Labour weekend brought about some beautiful weather and the rivers were very clear. I took a couple of clients for a session down the lower Tongariro. Surprisingly for such a beautiful day and being a long weekend , there was not a lot of fishermen on the water. With the clear conditions it was good fun fishing to sighted fish although they were quite spooky. In one reach of the river there were a school of big browns that had stationed themselves in a position that was just about impossible to fish to. I’ll keep an eye on this area in coming weeks and perhaps try to hatch a plan to catch them (or one of them 🤔).

The temperature down here hasn’t really gone up too much at the moment but it won’t be far away and some early dry fly activity will become more prominent. This is always a good time of year and I don’t think anything beats seeing a trout rise for the fly. All rivers in the region have less traffic on them now so if you don’t like crowds, now is a good time to be on the water with the chance of still catching some nice fish.  Little naturals like Hare and Copper and Pheasant Tail nymphs are working well now with attention to size being a consideration. If the trout aren’t biting your size 12, try a 14 or even 16 before you change patterns completely.

The I Love Fly Fishing shop in Turangi has been busy since Labour Weekend with people getting prepared for the coming summer.  More and more people are tying their own flies and we have a very large range of fly tying materials to look at.  As always, for all your requirements, give me a ring 021667867 and I’ll sort you out anytime. Until next time,

Cheers, Brian
