Turangi Fishing Report 17 November 2022

The couple from California had a sucessful (if very wet) morning.

Hello fellow fly fishers.

Well it has been an up and down week as far as weather is concerned and of course this is to be expected at this time of year. The local rivers didn’t fluctuate very much and are generally reasonably clear. I spent a day over at the Whanganui and Whakapapa Rivers today and it appears the fishing is picking up on last month. While I found the Whakapapa slow, the Whanganui  was a bit more receptive and this will improve as the weather gets warmer.

A good client who caught a couple of nice jacks.
Fishing the Boulder Reach, Tongariro River.

Once again I have found the Tongariro River to be the best producer with some nice fish around. I took an American and his wife out on Friday and he was hooked up on his first cast. Unfortunately the rod came out of its socket at the halfway point and the fly line got twisted around the front section not being helped by a fish on the other end curtailing it downstream!!!  I managed to get the rod back together and untangle the line around the tip of the rod and believe it or not the trout was still on. Not for long however.  The strain was too much and the fish broke free. Not the ideal start but an adrenaline rush all the same and we both had a good laugh about it. My American client was to catch some good fish later on (he was a good caster and fisherman who has spent his last 25 years working in USA Fisheries.

An American client who could cast a good line.
Euro nymphing the Whanganui River. Ideal method to drift through the channel on a he other side of the rock.

The weather was very wet but him and his wife were not worried by it. They had come a long way and were determined to fish the mighty Tongariro and so they did. Fortunately they were both to have some action. On Sunday morning I took out some regular clients and once again my male client was hooked up first cast. We were in the middle reaches of the Tongariro and like the Americans , the day was very wet.

My male client soon caught an even bigger fish than his first one and kept it for dinner that night. His wife is just learning and unfortunately did not land a fish but did have one on for a period. She was casting very well and the fishing action was not exactly electric and she was a bit stiff that a fish didn’t come to the net but they are coming with me again so next time I fear for the fish 😂.

Small naturals are doing it for me and the Cleardrift Egg is still working as good as anything.  The I Love Fly Fishing Shop has been steady with a number of people purchasing our new range of fly tying materials. We are well catered for in this department so why don’t you come and check it out. Remember, whatever your requirements, you can ring me anytime if outside normal trading hours and I will open up ( within reason of course 😀). 021667867.

Until next time.
