Turangi Fishing Report 16 Feb 2022

Brian Willson, professional guide, 021667867, brings us his weekly fly fishing report from Turangi for the Central North Island lakes and rivers.

Hi fellow fly fishers,

Lake Taupo and its tributaries have continued to fish well this past week. The Tongariro River has good numbers of trout rising freely to the dry fly throughout the day and early evenings and there are some big browns moving up. Earlier in the week, the river was very low and clear and fooling some of these trout wasn’t easy. At the time of writing the river has received a good fresh after the storm that has just battered the country and the next few days should see some excellent fishing especially with the weather forecast looking pretty good in the coming days. The Tauranga Taupo River is also experiencing some quality dry fly fishing in the upper reaches.

Nymphing and Czech Nymphing are also going well. Concentrate on the faster, shallower water for best results. Recommended flies this week:

  • Dry: Cicada, Parachute Adams, Lacemoth patterns.
  • Nymph: Pheasant Tail and variants, Hare and Copper and variants, Copper John.

If success is not forthcoming, change the size, try going smaller.

We are coming into an exciting time of year when small stream mouth fishing excels. For the next 3 months there will be the opportunity to catch a large brown trout on a mild autumn evening especially if there is rain in the air. Large streamers like Marabou or Wooly Bugger work very well.

Lumo flies too are deadly although brownies tend to not be fooled by these so much but rainbows will smash them. A handy hint here. If you only use a lumo bead to the head of, say a marabou, browns will take this. Black, Olive or a combination of these are the colours to go for. Don’t be scared to try a number 2 fly and don’t venture into the water too far, the trout will come to you.
