Greetings fellow fly fishers,

Well, we are now well into March and it has been an interesting week on the fishing front. Generally the whole week has been fine except at the time of writing, (Friday morning), it is raining but due to clear up this afternoon.

One very long brown trout, Tauranga Taupo River.

The fishing has been pretty hard and hasn’t been helped by Genesis flushing the Tongariro from last Sunday to raise the water to a constant 55 cumecs and this is expected to continue for the next month or so. The river is higher but clear quite fishable although the fluctuating flows from the earlier floods and now this seems to have unsettled the fish a bit.

Last Sunday I took some Australian anglers up to The Boulder Reach on the Tongariro River and had some good dry fly action. The river was running at about 27 cumecs and the trout were consistently feeding off the top. This has slowed down considerably with the extra water flow so I have had my clients change to nymphing and wet lining although we had some fun spotting and casting to some good rainbows in The Hinemaiaia River with the dry fly. Small Adams and Lacewing Moth imitations seemed to work best here.

There are some very big brown trout hanging around the small stream mouths at the moment and catching them will get easier as the big moon in the sky is waning. Yes, night time is the answer for these brutes and a bit of moisture in the air doesn’t hurt either.
