Greetings fellow fly fishers,

Another week has come and gone and it’s hard to believe but as I am writing this we are now into June. The fishing this week has been a mixed bag with some very good fish coming out of the river mixed with some fairly average ones. The weather still doesn’t quite know what to do and we seem to be bombarded with wet weather systems hitting the country all the time accompanied by strong winds which doesn’t make fishing (or guiding) easy.

Arriving at the Lower Bridge Pool, Tongariro River
Nice Fish.

My Australian clients had a bit of success up The Hinemaiaia River and kept a few fish to be smoked which I arranged for them. There are a lot more fishermen turning up now on all rivers and this will increase in the next few months. It was good to see the tracks in The Hinemaiaia have recently been cleared so you don’t have to worry so much about tearing your waders on blackberries so much.

Silver bullet , Tongariro River
Some nice fish being caught.

I did just that the other day when I was guiding these Australians on the “TT”. First thing in the morning, before anyone had cast a line, I thought I was being clever and found a shortcut to the river only to hear that horrible rip sound at the bottom of the left leg on my waders. Sure enough , when I stepped into the water, I could feel a cold sensation on my left calf and I knew then that by the end of the day , I was going to have a wet leg and I was just going to have to put up with it as it wasn’t worth going back to the vehicle to get another pair.

I am happy to say, I found the tear when I got home (not overly big but certainly enough to ensure I was going to be wet for the day), have repaired same and now the waders are as good as new. Earlier in the week the “TT” coloured up a fair bit but at time of writing, all rivers are fishable.

I have found swinging flies (and big flies) seems to be the best method at the moment and keep moving around to find the fish. The big runs have not started yet when the fish will find you wherever you may be, but they will not be far away. I normally find when some good frosts start coming, the fishing action ramps up. The temperatures at the moment are strangely mild, sometimes even warm in the evenings, but this won’t last. As I say, we are now officially in winter, and the best fishing is in front of us.

The I Love Fly Fishing shop has been fairly busy with more and more fishers getting prepared for the great fishing we can expect with the spawning runs underway now.  We have a good range of stock in at the moment, just check the ILFF website and if I haven’t got it, I will soon get it in.  As always, all your fly fishing and fly tying needs call and see me at the I Love Fly Fishing Shop in Turangi, 8 Wiremu St, phone 021667867. If there is anything you need, give me a ring and I will open up anytime (within reason of course 😀), just call me and I’ll sort you out. 021667867.
