The Squirmy Worm

It’s true that some frown upon this very effective fly. Its cousin the San Juan Worm has been around since I started fly fishing 20 years ago and it never seemed to cause trouble. Fly or not a fly it works very well and is a fly in the eyes of the regulations anyway so fish it.

This is simple beaded version is my go-to squirmy worm pattern for euro nymphing. I started using it this past winter for Taupo trout and it worked a treat on the winter runs. It should be great in dirty water in summer as well.

Squirmy Worm Material (Colour of your choice, red works well)

Size 10 Barbless Egg Hook

Orange Power Thread (Veevus)

3.5mm + Tungsten bead (countersunk, not slotted)
